Results of the 2024 Return to Farming and Rural Migration Survey Announced

Gokseong County, Jeonnam, announced on the 18th the results of the "2024 Gokseong County Return-to-Farming and Return-to-Village Status Survey," which has been conducted since June.
According to the county, this survey targeted the heads of households and household members aged 19 or older who moved to Gokseong within the past three years (2021-2023) as return-to-farming or return-to-village residents. This was the third survey, conducted every three years since the first "Gokseong County Return-to-Farming and Return-to-Village Status Survey" in 2018.
Gokseong County recently announced the results of the 'Return to Farming and Rural Migration Survey' on the 18th. In the past three years, 884 residents from 722 households have returned to farming or migrated to rural areas in Gokseong, with 575 residents from 477 households migrating to rural areas and 309 residents from 245 households returning to farming. The results showed that 722 households and 884 individuals moved to Gokseong as return-to-farming or return-to-village residents over the past three years. Of these, 477 households (575 people) were return-to-village, and 245 households (309 people) were return-to-farming. By residential area, there were 355 in the Gokseong area, 231 in the Seokgok area, and 298 in the Okgwa area.
Prior to moving, most residents came from Gwangju, Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Jeonbuk, in that order. The most common reason for choosing Gokseong County was "because it is my hometown" at 30.8%, followed by "because family or relatives live here" at 29.3%.
Regarding overall satisfaction with returning to farming or village life, 33.3% responded that they were satisfied, which is more than three times higher than the dissatisfaction rate (9.5%). The main reason for satisfaction was "because the natural environment and scenery are beautiful" at 68.6%, while the main reason for dissatisfaction was "because living convenience facilities are inadequate" at 55.8%.
Among return-to-farming and return-to-village residents, 88.6% said they had no plans to move to another area. Among the 11.4% who did have plans to move, the reasons were "problems with living facilities" (26.9%), "workplace or business issues" (21.8%), and "economic problems" (15.3%).
The most highly rated policies for return-to-farming and return-to-village residents were the "Support Project for Repair Costs of Return-to-Farming and Return-to-Village Farmhouses," the "Loan Support Project for Return-to-Farming Agricultural Start-up and House Purchase," and the "Support Project for Fostering New Agricultural Workforce among Return-to-Farming Residents."
Policies considered necessary for the successful settlement of return-to-farming and return-to-village residents included providing information on returning to farming and village life (32%), providing information on jobs and related opportunities (17.9%), and supporting funds for house purchase or rental (16.8%).
A county official stated, "This survey has laid the foundation for establishing customized policies for the successful settlement of return-to-farming and return-to-village households," and added, "Through this, Gokseong County will be able to strengthen its competitiveness in attracting new residents."
