Yongin City Installs Smart Crosswalks at 26 Child Protection Zones

Application of Automatic Pedestrian Signal Extension and Right-Turn Vehicle Warning System

Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 18th that it has installed smart crosswalks incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology at 26 child protection zones within the city.

Two systems have been applied to the newly installed smart crosswalks.

First, the 'Pedestrian Signal Automatic Extension System' has been implemented at intersections in front of Yeokbuk Elementary School, Neungwon Elementary School, and Yongin Dunjeon Elementary School in Cheoin-gu; Eondong Elementary School, Seokseong Elementary School, Guseong Hillstate, Heungdeok Elementary School, Dokjeong Elementary School, Bojeong Elementary School, Eojeong Elementary School, and Chodang Elementary School in Giheung-gu; as well as at the main and rear gates of Gogi Elementary School and in front of Dongcheon Elementary School in Suji-gu. This system uses AI-enabled cameras to detect pedestrians and automatically extends the signal time if children or elderly pedestrians need more time to cross the street.

The 'Right-Turn Vehicle Warning System' has been applied to four smart crosswalks at Hambak Elementary School in Cheoin-gu, Saemmal Elementary School in Giheung-gu, and Gojin Elementary School and Beodeulchi Village Intersection in Suji-gu. This system detects pedestrians with AI cameras to alert drivers making right turns at intersections, helping them to better identify pedestrians at a glance.

Both systems have been applied to four smart crosswalks located at Nagok Elementary School and Galgok Elementary School in Giheung-gu, as well as Jeongpyeong Elementary School and Daecheong Elementary School in Suji-gu.

As part of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project to enhance child pedestrian safety, the city invested 980 million KRW from city funds for the installation of these smart crosswalks, and 150 million KRW from provincial funds for improvements in child protection zones.

A city official stated, "We will do our best to ensure that the smart crosswalks operate efficiently through monitoring at the Advanced Traffic Center."
