From side dish sharing volunteer work to cooking classes... Expected to serve as a new communication platform connecting the local community

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has established the second shared kitchen, ‘Mokhwa Suragan,’ on the first floor of Mokhwa Village Vitality Center in Mullae-dong, to further spread the culture of sharing in the local community.

‘Mokhwa Suragan’ is a space custom-designed for small-scale users such as single-person households to use more conveniently, and is expected to newly establish itself as a hub for sharing and communication within the local community.

In June, the district created the first shared kitchen, ‘Hamkke Cookcook,’ in Yeongdeungpo-dong, providing a warm space where neighbors can cook and share food together. Through this, the district supported side dish sharing for a total of 2,120 households living alone, including elderly living alone and young single-person households, and operated various cooking programs targeting pregnant women and youth, receiving great responses.

Based on these achievements, ‘Mokhwa Suragan’ has an area of 37㎡ (approximately 11 pyeong) and is equipped with household induction cooktops and individual cooking stations, providing an optimized kitchen environment for small-scale users. While the existing shared kitchens were spaces suitable for large-scale cooking, Mokhwa Suragan’s major feature is its custom design for convenient use by individual users such as single-person households. Additionally, basic cooking tools and kitchen supplies are provided so that anyone can easily use the space.

The operating hours are expanded to accommodate various groups, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. After a pilot operation until the end of this year, it is scheduled to officially open in January next year.

In the future, ‘Mokhwa Suragan’ will be used not only for side dish sharing volunteer activities but also as a space for various sharing culture programs for food-vulnerable groups in connection with resident autonomy projects.

The district will hold an opening ceremony on December 19 to celebrate the first start of Mokhwa Suragan. On that day, a ‘Home-cooked Meal Cooking Class’ will be operated by volunteer members of the Mullae-dong Volunteer Group, and on Saturday the 21st, a dietary education program aimed at young people accustomed to delivery food and convenience meals will be conducted to promote balanced eating habits.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “I hope that Mokhwa Suragan will become a new communication platform where neighbors connect beyond just a space for cooking food,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to spread the culture of sharing in the local community and create a warm Yeongdeungpo where no neighbors are left out and everyone lives together.”
