African Swine Fever has occurred 49 times domestically (20 cases in Gyeonggi-do) since the first outbreak in Paju in September 2019. The recent case in Yangju-si occurred 45 days after the outbreak in Hongcheon, Gangwon-do on November 3, 2024, and 108 days after the case in Gimpo-si on August 30. To prevent further spread, pigs at the affected farm are currently undergoing emergency culling.
Following confirmation of the ASF outbreak, the province has imposed movement restrictions on 45 pig farms with a total of 71,088 pigs within a 10 km quarantine zone, conducting clinical surveillance and detailed testing.
To prevent the spread of ASF, livestock facilities and pig farms are being instructed to perform daily self-disinfection. Additionally, major control checkpoints have been established, and a total of 160 available disinfection vehicles, including joint disinfection teams, have been mobilized to intensively disinfect vulnerable farms and surrounding roads.
Furthermore, the province is making every effort to contain the disease by operating 35 key disinfection facilities, control checkpoints, and deploying 239 dedicated officers to pig farms throughout the province for quarantine guidance.
After reviewing the quarantine management situation, Deputy Governor Oh encouraged the on-site quarantine staff and ordered thorough and flawless disinfection measures.
Deputy Governor Oh reiterated the importance of initial quarantine measures such as movement restrictions, emergency culling, and disinfection, urging, “To prevent further spread, please adhere to basic quarantine rules and ensure strict biosecurity to prevent contamination from wildlife and vehicles entering farms. Also, immediately report any suspicious symptoms to the quarantine authorities.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs issued a temporary movement ban for 48 hours from 6 p.m. on the 16th to 6 p.m. on the 18th for pig farms, vehicles, and facilities in seven cities/counties within the province (Yangju, Yeoncheon, Pocheon, Dongducheon, Uijeongbu, Goyang, Paju). Violating the movement ban order may result in imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million KRW under the Infectious Animal Disease Prevention Act.
