For the first time in Korea, a meteorological science museum themed around the ocean will open in Yeosu.

With one basement floor and three above-ground floors, totaling 5,376㎡ in floor area, Yeosu City provided 7.2 billion KRW for the land purchase, and the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration will operate the facility.

The meteorological science museum offers visitors a broad understanding of meteorological science principles related to sea weather, as well as the connection between the ocean and climate change.

The city expects the museum to establish itself as a new tourism content linked to the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo and to enhance its status as a leading city in climate change.

The museum is designed as a space where visitors can experience various exhibitions, education, and scientific culture, including five exhibition halls and one special video theater. The five exhibition halls are the Weather Play Experience Hall, Ocean Meteorological Phenomena Hall, Ocean Meteorological Observation Hall, Media Art Hall, and Ocean Climate Change Hall.

In the 'Weather Play Experience Hall,' visitors can learn and experience the basic principles of meteorological phenomena such as wind, precipitation, thunder, and lightning through physical play. In the 'Ocean Meteorological Phenomena Hall,' visitors can experience wind strength according to typhoon intensity and create waves of different heights.

In the 'Ocean Meteorological Observation Hall,' visitors can learn about the principles of observing meteorological elements and encounter various ocean meteorological observation equipment. The 'Media Art Hall' is an interactive experience where visitors create weather that changes according to their movements. The 'Ocean Climate Change Hall' is a space to understand the relationship between the ocean and climate change, recognize the seriousness of climate change, and pledge to overcome it.

The special video theater is a 12-meter diameter spherical space where visitors can experience virtual reality of space, Earth, and underwater environments.

A city official said, “The National Yeosu Ocean Meteorological Science Museum, opening on the 21st, is expected to provide excellent experiential opportunities for future generations as a space for ocean meteorology, climate, and educational culture,” and added, “We ask for the enthusiastic support of citizens and tourists.”
