Aprogen is accelerating the establishment of new top management at Georit Energy.
On the 16th, Aprogen, a domestic biosimilar company, announced that the soon-to-be-acquired Georit Energy plans to recruit former Seoul National University Research Director as an outside director, Dr. Park Mijeong, former head of Aprogen’s New Drug Research Institute, as Chief Development Officer (CDO), and Choi Unggi, former Gyeonggi Provincial Government broadcasting advisor, as Senior Vice President of Media Strategy. This is the second top management appointment following the designation of Professor Jeong Jonggyeong, director of Seoul National University Genetic Engineering Research Institute, as president of the brain disease therapeutics division.
Outside director candidate Sung Nohyeon is a towering figure in Korea’s immunology field, having served as director of the Genetic Engineering Research Institute, head of Industry-Academia Cooperation Foundation, and research director at Seoul National University. He completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in molecular biology at Seoul National University and earned a Ph.D. in immunology from Stanford University in the United States. Since joining the Department of Life Sciences at Seoul National University as a professor in 1993, he has published over 140 immunology research papers in the world’s most prestigious academic journals over more than 30 years.
Professor Sung has been recognized for his remarkable achievements by being appointed president of the Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology, Korea’s largest life sciences researchers’ association, and as an advisory member of the International Vaccine Institute. Upon completion of Aprogen’s acquisition of Georit Energy, outside director Sung Nohyeon will actively advise not only as an outside director of Georit Energy but also on research and development and open innovation in Georit Energy’s brain disease therapeutics division.
Dr. Park Mijeong is expected to be recruited as CDO to practically lead the development of Parkinson’s disease therapeutics and diagnostics in the brain disease therapeutics division. She led new drug development for dementia treatments, liver disease treatments, and rheumatoid arthritis treatments as pharmacology director at LG Life Sciences Research Institute for 10 years. She also served as head of the strategic planning team at LG Life Sciences headquarters for many years, responsible for licensing out new drugs developed by LG Life Sciences to global big pharma. The large-scale deal transferring LG Life Sciences’ new hepatitis B treatment drug to global pharmaceutical company Gilead was also the work of CDO candidate Park Mijeong. She served as head of Aprogen’s New Drug Research Institute from 2015 to 2022, briefly left the Aprogen Group, and is now rejoining the group through the acquisition of Georit Energy.
Georit Energy will also significantly strengthen its external public relations functions, including media. To this end, it plans to recruit Choi Unggi, former broadcasting advisor at Gyeonggi Provincial Government, as Senior Vice President of Media Strategy. Candidate Choi graduated from Yonsei University’s Department of English Literature and joined SBS, where he worked for many years as a political, economic, and social desk reporter. From around 2010, he served as SBS Seongnam bureau chief for about 10 years, informing the public about Seongnam city administration, where Aprogen’s headquarters are located.
He then served as broadcasting advisor at Gyeonggi Provincial Government from 2018 and worked as a broadcasting advisor for the Democratic Party’s 20th presidential election campaign in 2022. Senior Vice President candidate Choi Unggi will concurrently serve as Senior Vice President of Media Strategy at Aprogen’s Financial Investment Planning Headquarters located in Yeouido, overseeing media and external public relations for the entire Aprogen Group.
