President-elect of the United States Donald Trump on the 16th (local time) nominated George Glass, former ambassador to Portugal, as the U.S. ambassador to Japan.
On the same day, Trump announced through his social networking service (SNS) Truth Social, "I am pleased to announce Glass as the next U.S. ambassador to Japan," adding, "George, a former investment bank president, will bring business insight to the ambassadorial role." He emphasized, "He will always put America first."

Former Ambassador Glass is one of Trump’s long-time supporters. In 1990, he founded an investment bank specializing in the technology sector in Portland, and in 2015, he entered the real estate development business. He supported Trump in the 2016 presidential election and served as ambassador to Portugal for nearly four years starting in 2017. He also supported Trump in the recent election.
During his tenure, Glass was credited with countering China’s advances. He opposed the participation of Chinese telecommunications equipment and mobile phone manufacturer Huawei in Portugal’s 5G projects and warned that if Portugal entrusted major port construction to Chinese companies, the export of U.S. natural gas would be halted.
Earlier, on the 5th, Trump nominated former U.S. Senator David Perdue as ambassador to China. The ambassador to South Korea has not yet been announced.
