Yongin City Holds '2024 Cooperation Forum' for Development Strategy of 1.5 Million Population Metropolitan Area

Mayor Sang-il Lee "Expecting Various Discussions for Expanding Infrastructure in Transportation and Culture & Arts"

On the 16th, Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province held the '2024 Yongin Special City Cooperation Forum' at the City Hall Convention Hall to discuss development strategies for a metropolitan city with a population of 1.5 million.


About 150 people attended the forum, including Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin, Kim Seok-jung, Co-Chairman of the Yongin City Public-Private Cooperation Committee, Lee Sang-dae, Director of the Yongin City Policy Research Institute, members of the Yongin City Public-Private Cooperation Committee, and citizens. The forum featured expert presentations and discussions on the city's future vision and development strategies.

Mayor Lee stated, "Yongin City is undergoing large-scale developments such as the advanced system semiconductor national industrial complex with a 360 trillion KRW investment by Samsung Electronics, the 20 trillion KRW Samsung Electronics Giheung Future Research Complex, and the 122 trillion KRW Yongin Semiconductor Cluster," adding, "As various projects are underway, the city faces the task of expanding infrastructure for transportation, education, culture and arts, and community sports." He also emphasized, "Nationally, we are also facing challenges such as low birth rates and overcoming the climate crisis," and highlighted that "the forum is a meaningful occasion for important discussions directly related to the city's future."


At the forum, Jeon Byung-hye, Deputy Director of the Yongin City Policy Research Institute, presented on the topic of '2040 Yongin Special City Future Vision and Development Strategy,' proposing five major goals and strategic tasks based on the city's future outlook until 2040, and suggested ways to enhance the city's potential.


Professor Heo Hyung-jo of Dankook University's Department of Public Administration presented on 'Administrative and Financial Establishment Plans for Growth into a 1.5 Million Metropolitan City,' outlining the necessary administrative management system establishment and financial structure reinforcement measures required as the city transitions into a large-scale urban area.


Professor Choi Yoo-jin of Gangnam University's Department of Political Economy spoke on 'Plans for Establishing Yongin City Governance System and Execution Strategies,' explaining the necessity of building urban governance and strategies for establishing and implementing governance in the old city areas.


Following the expert presentations, Professor Kim Hyung-soo of Dankook University's Department of Public Administration chaired a panel discussion with participants including Professor Song Young-hyun of the University of Seoul, Professor Chae Ji-min of Sungshin Women's University, and Lee Sung-woo, Director of the Global Regional Research Division at the Gyeonggi Research Institute.


A city official stated, "We will strive to incorporate the opinions of experts and citizens discussed at the forum into policies," and added, "We will continue to create many opportunities to discuss policies with citizens and experts to establish a healthy culture of cooperation."
