Cooperation and Exchange to Develop Tourism Products for Domestic and Foreign Visitors Using the Donghae Jungbu Line

Samcheok City, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Mayor Park Sang-su) announced on the 16th that the Gangwon Tourism Foundation and the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation held a ‘MOU Signing Ceremony for Tourism Activation Cooperation following the Opening of the Samcheok~Pohang Railway’ in Samcheok City.

With the opening of the Samcheok~Pohang Donghae Jungbu Line railway scheduled for the 31st of this month, the Gyeongsangbuk-do region and the southern Gangwon region will be included within a daily living area, and it is expected that the economies of the East Coast cities will gain vitality. Amid this, the signing ceremony for cooperation between the two organizations was held in Samcheok City, which is poised to become the central city of the Donghae Jungbu Line railway and a ‘southern Gangwon hub city,’ raising expectations for economic revitalization among residents of Samcheok and other East Coast cities.


The signing ceremony was attended by key officials from major organizations, including Choi Seong-hyun, CEO of the Gangwon Tourism Foundation, Kim Nam-il, President of the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation, Ok Jong-gi, CEO of the Samcheok Tourism and Culture Foundation, and Jo In-seong, Director of Economic Promotion of Samcheok City.

The two organizations agreed to cooperate on developing linked tourism content and joint marketing between Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, developing tourism products for domestic and foreign users of the Donghae Jungbu Line, collaborating to advance as a marine cultural tourism city, promoting sustainable Donghae ecological preservation and development, carbon neutrality and fair travel product development, and exchanging domestic and international tourism information and tourism business networks.


Kim Nam-il, President of the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation, stated, “The opening of the Donghae Jungbu Line is expected to bring new and significant changes in people, culture, and industry,” adding, “Since Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province share a deep bond through the common value of the East Coast, we will actively cooperate in developing sea-related content and products.”


Choi Seong-hyun, CEO of the Gangwon Tourism Foundation, said, “With the opening of the Donghae Jungbu Line coinciding with the Year of Visit Gangwon 2025, the related regions will face a new turning point,” and added, “Gangwon Province and Gyeongbuk will exchange their strengths to create new synergy effects, and we will continuously communicate with related organizations to contribute to regional economic revitalization.”


A Samcheok City official who attended the signing ceremony expressed, “We deeply thank the representatives of the two organizations who visited Samcheok City for the opening of the Donghae Jungbu Line,” and stated, “Through this agreement, Samcheok City will take the lead in becoming a hub city in the southern Gangwon region and in leading positive changes in culture, tourism, new industries, and transportation revolution between the two regions.”
