Since launching its smart factory initiative in 2017, POSCO has been recognized for its world-class production technology of World Top Premium products, earning the distinction of being the first domestic manufacturer to be named a ‘Lighthouse Factory’ by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2019.
Since then, Pohang Steelworks has continuously identified smart projects, focusing on automating high-risk tasks and simple repetitive operations.
The integrated management process of Pohang Steelworks’ smart system consists of four main stages: ▲Project Discovery ▲Data Analysis & Modeling ▲Field Application ▲Maintenance.
First, in the Project Discovery stage, the EIC Technology Department supports the development of CCTV video technology that replaces the eyes of workers by equipping various cameras such as standard, high-speed, thermal imaging, and 3D cameras. This allows for pre-verification of the feasibility of projects even before equipment investment.
Second, in the Data Analysis & Modeling stage, a Smart Help Center staffed with data analysis experts supports technical consulting and modeling tasks to assist employees who are not familiar with AI technology.
Third, in the Field Application stage, the integrated AI server at the Smart Data Center supports field personnel in executing the developed models, significantly reducing project investment costs and development time.
Finally, in the Maintenance stage, AI model maintenance specialists from the EIC Technology Department comprehensively manage the hardware and software of 27 factories. This strengthens the stability and robustness of all smart systems while promoting the advancement and redevelopment of AI model performance.
Ji Tae-ho, leader of the Process Automation Section at the EIC Technology Department, stated, “We continuously review to ensure there are no blind spots in AI project maintenance. We will do our best to listen to the concerns from the field and support Pohang Steelworks in realizing an intelligent factory.”
