The High-ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Unit has reportedly requested the National Archives to prohibit the disposal of materials related to the '12·3 Emergency Martial Law Incident.'
On the 15th, the Investigation Unit announced that it requested the prohibition of disposal on the 10th due to the necessity of preserving institutional materials under investigation related to the emergency martial law incident.
According to the Public Records Management Act, the National Archives can decide to prohibit the disposal of records if requested by an investigative agency in matters of national significance. The Investigation Unit's request provides the National Archives with the authority to enforce that institutions related to the emergency martial law cannot arbitrarily dispose of materials.
Previously, the Investigation Unit had requested the National Archives to prohibit the disposal of records in connection with the investigation of the death of the late Corporal Chae Su-geun. The Archives accepted this and on the 13th issued disposal prohibition decisions to the National Security Office, Ministry of National Defense, Defense Counterintelligence Command, Navy Marine Corps Command, National Police Agency, and Gyeongbuk Police Agency.
