The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 15th that eight general national roads, including the Pyeongtaek~Osan section in Gyeonggi Province and the Jeungpyeong~Eumseong section in Chungbuk Province, will be sequentially opened from the next day until the 31st.
The construction of the eight sections, with a total project cost of 773.7 billion KRW, began between 2016 and 2018. The total length of the sections is 61.6 km. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport initiated this project to alleviate road traffic congestion and improve roads in areas with high accident risks.
To relieve road traffic congestion, construction was carried out on the Pyeongtaek~Osan section (National Road No. 1) in Jinwi-myeon, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi Province, which will open at 11 a.m. the next day. The section, which was previously four lanes, has been expanded to six lanes. Mobility between surrounding cities such as Osan-si and Hwaseong-si, as well as accessibility to Jinwi Industrial Complex, is expected to improve.
Similarly, the Paltan~Bongdam section (National Road No. 43) in Paltan-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi Province, will also be expanded from four lanes to six lanes. With the opening of this section at 11 a.m. on the 27th, access to the Seoul Metropolitan Area’s Second Ring Expressway will become easier.
In addition, the Boryeong Seongju Bypass Road (National Road No. 40) in Seongju-myeon, Boryeong-si, Chungnam Province, will open, reducing travel time from the previous 15 minutes to 5 minutes. The Chungcheong Inland Expressway (National Road No. 36), connecting Jeungpyeong-gun to Eumseong-gun in Chungbuk Province, will reduce travel time from Jeungpyeong to Eumseong from 15 minutes to 7 minutes upon full opening. The opening of the Sanggu~Hyohyeon bypass road (National Road No. 7) in Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk Province, will shorten travel time between Gyeongju and Ulsan by 5 minutes.
Road improvement construction has started in areas with high accident risks, such as the Cheongyang~Sinpung section (National Road No. 39) between Cheongyang-gun and Gongju-si in Chungnam Province, which will open at noon on the 27th. Although the road was narrow and had poor alignment, increasing accident risk, safety has been enhanced through section improvements. On the same day, the Yeongyang~Pyeonghae section (National Road No. 99) in Onjeong-myeon and Pyeonghae-eup, Uljin-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, will allow priority use of a 4.9 km section with high accident potential out of the total 14.6 km.
The Uiryeong~Hapcheon section (National Road No. 20) between Jeonggok-myeon, Uiryeong-gun, and Cheongdeok-myeon, Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongnam Province, has also been improved from two lanes to enhance safety. Driving will be possible on this section from 2 p.m. on the 31st.
Lee Woo-je, Director of the Road Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "We will steadily implement road network expansion projects to improve the safety and drivability for road users."
