Busan City Achieves Record-High Results in This Year's 'Busan Cultural Heritage Care Project'

Busan Cultural Heritage Care Center Achieves Top Grade for Two Consecutive Years in National Heritage Administration Evaluation

Mayor Park Hyung-jun: "We Will Continue the Reputation as the 'Best City for Cultural Heritage Care'"

Busan City announced that the 'Busan Cultural Heritage Care Center' has received the highest grade, the 'Excellent S Grade,' for two consecutive years among 25 regional cultural heritage care centers nationwide in the 2024 evaluation conducted by the Cultural Heritage Administration.

Additionally, the city was selected as an excellent institution for cultural heritage care in 2024 by the Cultural Heritage Administration, earning the honor of having both the highest grade cultural heritage care center and being the top institution in cultural heritage care.

On the 12th, the city received an institutional commendation at the 'Cultural Heritage Care Joint Training Session' hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration.

The Cultural Heritage Administration conducts an annual evaluation of 25 regional cultural heritage care centers affiliated with 17 metropolitan and provincial governments nationwide to enhance the quality of cultural heritage management and to systematically and efficiently carry out care projects.

This year, the city received high scores evenly across four areas: planning, execution, performance, and feedback of the cultural heritage care project, and was especially highly rated for discovering best practices to improve the effectiveness of care projects.

The 'Cultural Heritage Care Project' is a matching project between the Cultural Heritage Administration and 17 metropolitan and provincial governments, leading the preservation of nationally and municipally designated cultural heritage as well as non-designated cultural heritage through routine and minor repairs monitored by 25 regional cultural heritage care centers nationwide. It is operated with lottery funds.

The city and its 16 districts and counties closely cooperate through emergency monitoring during natural disasters, establishing a swift and exemplary network and information sharing, becoming a model case for other regional cultural heritage care centers in other provinces.

In particular, the city's special policy, the '2024 Busan Cultural Heritage Care Project Experience Class,' held on June 8 at Dongnae Budongheon, a city-designated cultural heritage site, was successfully conducted with participation from students and Busan citizens. The class was fully booked with about 50 applicants within two days of the first-come, first-served recruitment, receiving great enthusiasm from students and citizens.

Participants experienced cultural heritage care activities that are usually difficult to access, including a guided explanation of Dongnae Hyanggyo by a professional cultural interpreter, traditional Korean plastering, tile stacking, applying hanji paper, and oiling wooden materials.

Through this, participants deeply understood the precious Korean culture and enhanced their awareness as caretakers of cultural heritage’s past, present, and future, pledging to continue this meaningful tradition annually.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “Following last year’s highest grade achievement in the cultural heritage care project, receiving the S grade for two consecutive years and being awarded as an excellent cultural heritage institution this year makes this a meaningful year. Building on the city and Busan Cultural Heritage Care Center’s best achievements this year, we will strengthen the substance of the cultural heritage care project next year and leverage the strength of organic information sharing and cooperation among related institutions, which is a model case of our city, to continue the reputation of 'Busan as the best city for cultural heritage care.'”
