The governments of Korea and Japan have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).
On the 13th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it held a Korea-Japan ICT Policy Forum working-level meeting together with Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) between the two countries. This forum was conducted at the director-general level as a follow-up to the 1st Korea-Japan ICT Policy Forum (ministerial level) held in December last year and to prepare for the next meeting.
During the meeting, the Ministry of Science and ICT discussed key issues such as AI, digital standardization, and Open RAN. Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation on AI technology and policies and to share best practices regarding compliance with global norms. In particular, they plan to expand cooperation in the AI field between the two countries through sharing cases of AI guidelines.
Additionally, they plan to reinforce private sector-led performance-based international standardization cooperation in the ICT field and to further solidify the cooperative system between the standardization organizations of both countries to nurture standardization experts. The two countries aim to further enhance the international standardization of their digital technologies and their competitiveness in the global market.
They also discussed cooperation on Open RAN technology, agreeing to continuously collaborate to secure Open RAN technological capabilities and establish a foundation for entering the global market.
Hwang Seong-hoon, Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "Through this meeting, we made preliminary preparations for the 2nd ICT Policy Forum (ministerial level) scheduled to be held next year," and added, "We hope that the two countries can further strengthen their future-oriented cooperative relationship in technological development and global technology standardization in the ICT field." The Korea-Japan ICT Policy Forum is operated as a regular meeting, and next year it is scheduled to be held in Korea at the ministerial level.
