Members of Chonnam National University, including students, professors, staff, and alumni, strongly condemned President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of martial law.
The Chonnam National University Professors' Association, Student Council, Alumni Association, National University Labor Union, Honorary Professors' Association, Democratic Alumni Association, and the May 18 Research Institute held a "December 3rd Rebellion Condemnation Rally" on the afternoon of the 12th in front of the Democracy Maru at Chonnam National University. The rally proceeded with a people's ceremony, opening remarks, and a statement announcement.
They stated, "The Yoon Suk-yeol administration has disregarded the law and the people, mocked the entire nation by shamelessly abusing its power for personal gain with an anachronistic historical perspective," and "led a rebellion plot through unconstitutional martial law that trampled on the constitutional order to maintain power."
They also said, "The only constitutional way to end political chaos and uncertainty and restore the constitutional order is impeachment," and "The National Assembly must immediately suspend President Yoon, who destroyed democracy and plotted rebellion, and pass the impeachment motion."
Furthermore, they declared, "Yoon Suk-yeol, who orchestrated unconstitutional martial law and rebellion, must resign immediately, and the People Power Party must join the impeachment movement," adding, "If the second impeachment fails, we will continue the nationwide movement for the resignation of the Yoon administration until the end."
Kim Jae-gwan, president of the Chonnam National University Professors' Association, said in his opening remarks, "The entire nation trembled with betrayal upon learning that the president, who should uphold the constitution and be responsible for the lives and safety of the people, plotted unconstitutional martial law and rebellion," and "As Chonnam National University, the sacred site of the May 18 Democratization Movement, cannot remain silent while still recognizing the leader of the rebellion as president, we led this joint resolution rally."
Kim emphasized, "The Chonnam National University Professors' Code of Ethics states that professors must maintain critical intellect regarding the pressing realities faced by the region, nation, and humanity," and "Chonnam National University will take the lead until democracy is restored."
Meanwhile, on the 14th, when the impeachment vote will take place, Chonnam National University will join the "Gwangju Citizens' General Rally" held at the May 18 Democratic Square and conduct a street march from Chonnam National University to Geumnam-ro.
