Presentation of a Region-Led Super Metropolitan Area Development Strategy for Balanced Regional Development in Pohang-Ulsan-Gyeongju Area

On the 12th, Pohang City announced that the ‘Haeoreum Alliance Policy Forum’ was held at the Lotte Hotel in Ulsan, hosted by the Ulsan Institute, to explore win-win cooperation and future joint development plans.


At this forum, under the theme of ‘Sustainable Development of the Haeoreum Alliance and the Necessity of Enacting a Special Act for the Haeoreum Industrial Belt,’ legal and institutional measures were intensively discussed to address the industrial structure transformation and the regional extinction crisis in the Pohang, Ulsan, and Gyeongju areas.


Attended by Haeoreum Alliance officials including Jang Sang-gil, Vice Mayor of Pohang City; Ahn Seung-dae, Vice Mayor of Ulsan City; and Song Ho-jun, Vice Mayor of Gyeongju City, as well as scholars related to the Ulsan Institute and regional balanced development, the forum mainly focused on the necessity of enacting a special law to support the Haeoreum Industrial Belt.


At the forum, Hwang Ju-seong, a research fellow at the Ulsan Institute, presented on the ‘Significance and Necessity of Enacting a Special Act to Support the Haeoreum Industrial Belt,’ and Park Kyung-heon, head of the National Balanced Development Research Center at the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, proposed a ‘Regional-led Super Metropolitan Area Development Strategy for Regional Balanced Development.’


Following this, an expert panel discussion chaired by Kang Tae-ho, professor emeritus at Dongguk University, included discussions by Song Woo-kyung, president of the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade; Lee Moon-hee, research fellow at the Gyeongbuk Research Institute; Hong Sung-ho, research fellow at the Chungbuk Research Institute; and Kim Jung-seop, professor at UNIST.


Vice Mayor Jang Sang-gil stated, “This forum provided an opportunity to seek concrete solutions to overcome crises such as regional extinction faced by the Pohang-Ulsan-Gyeongju area and to achieve regional balanced development,” adding, “The three cities of the Haeoreum Alliance will continue to actively cooperate to achieve mutual growth.”
