At this report meeting, including Mayor Kim Kyung-il of Paju City, officials from Gyeonggi Province's Unification Infrastructure Development, the National Museum of Korea, the National Folk Museum, the Museum of Korean History, and university professors attended. The Korea Local Economy Research Institute, the agency conducting the project, reported the progress and shared opinions among related organizations and departments.
In 2019, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism conducted a research project titled 'Basic Plan for the Establishment of the DMZ Memory Museum' targeting border areas such as Paju, Cheorwon, and Goseong to create a cultural space encompassing the history and culture of the DMZ. Among these, Paju was selected as the optimal site. Accordingly, Paju City received 200 million KRW in national funding and began the project in November 2023.
Through this project, Paju City analyzed major central government policies for promoting the DMZ Hall of Memory and Paju's development conditions to establish ▲ basic directions for construction ▲ vision and promotion strategies ▲ analysis of candidate sites ▲ plans for major content composition ▲ introduction of convenience and cultural facilities ▲ and basic plans for management and operation.
Mayor Kim Kyung-il of Paju said, "Paju is inseparable from the DMZ, symbolized by Panmunjom, Daeseong-dong, the Third Tunnel, and Imjingak." He added, "We consider the current crisis as an opportunity and prepare for the day when the world's attention returns to the DMZ. I hope the 'DMZ Hall of Memory' will become a landmark of Paju."
