A speech by a high school girl from Busan, who boldly criticized President Yoon Suk-yeol and the People Power Party in the 'conservative stronghold' of Busan, is becoming a hot topic. The YouTube video containing this speech surpassed 1.18 million views just two days after its release, sparking a strong reaction.
On the 9th, a video titled "K-Daughter, a Daughter of Busan’s Moving Speech That Made the Older Generation Reflect" was uploaded on the YouTube channel Media Cooperative. The video shows a high school girl giving a loud speech at a rally held in downtown Busan on the 8th, the day after the vote on the impeachment motion against President Yoon failed due to lack of quorum.
The high school girl, Ms. A, introduced herself as "a daughter of Busan, having lived 18 years in Busan?attending elementary school in Sasang-gu, middle school in Jin-gu, and high school in Buk-gu." She then said, "I came here because I want to proudly say that I stood here at this moment in history when my little cousins who have just started walking and my younger brother at home learn about this moment in their history books in the distant future." She continued, "My friends and I, who learned about the history of democracy at school five months ago, were outraged seeing the current administration where democracy and the separation of powers are not respected at all," adding, "How can the president know less about the separation of powers than a high school senior?"
"The candlelight protests ignited across the nation are the true power of the people... Isn’t the ruling People Power Party ashamed to have their name?"

She also continued her criticism of the People Power Party for not participating in the impeachment vote. Ms. A said, "We are standing at a moment in history where the emergency martial law, which we only saw in textbooks, has come out into reality. The meaning of conservatism in our country has long since decayed. The People Power Party is no longer a conservative party but a pro-Japanese, anti-national party involved in rebellion," she condemned.
Regarding Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party, she said, "Keep your word," and criticized, "Is the orderly resignation you talk about just leaving the National Assembly? The People Power Party lawmakers chose to betray the people rather than become traitors to their party."
She added, "The candlelight protests ignited across the Republic of Korea are the true power of the people," and said, "Isn’t the ruling People Power Party ashamed to have their name? Where else in the world do citizens have to encourage politicians to vote? The one vote you gave up on was a vote the people trusted and cast for you. Why don’t you understand the weight of that one vote?" Furthermore, she emphasized, "My friends and I did not experience the May 16 military coup, but we experienced the Sewol ferry disaster in 2014; we did not experience the May 18 Democratization Movement, but we witnessed the Itaewon tragedy in 2022. Walking together to correct history and protect democracy is our future and our name."
Netizens responded passionately with comments such as "The birth of Busan’s Yu Gwan-sun," "Lawmakers worse than a high school girl should reflect," "I cried my eyes out watching the speech. I’m just sorry and grateful," "This is the sentiment of Busan," "Right. Understand the weight of one vote," "Our country is the only place where citizens plead with lawmakers to vote," "I completely agree with the speech," "How can a kid speak so well?" and "Proud daughter of Busan."
