Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei claimed on the 11th (local time) that the Syrian rebels' overthrow of the regime and declaration of victory stemmed from a conspiracy by the United States and Israel.
According to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency, Ayatollah Khamenei said in a public speech in Tehran on the same day, "There is no doubt that the Syrian crisis is the result of a joint conspiracy by the United States and the Zionists (Israel)."
He added, "The main conspirators, planners, and commanders are the United States and the Zionist regime," and "We have evidence of this."
Ayatollah Khamenei emphasized, "The resistance front grows stronger the more it is pressured and the more crimes occur," and "The scope of the resistance will expand."
Iran and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah supported the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad, which was ousted by rebel offensives during the 13-year Syrian civil war that began in 2011.
