Nam-gu, Gwangju City, was selected as an "Excellent Local Government" in the field of social security fraud management in the 2024 Regional Welfare Project Evaluation hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

According to Nam-gu on the 11th, the Ministry of Health and Welfare conducted an evaluation of regional welfare projects targeting 229 local governments nationwide to discover excellent cases of regional welfare innovation and to establish a foundation for the efficient implementation of these projects.

This evaluation was conducted by subdividing regional welfare projects into a total of 11 categories, and an evaluation committee composed of external experts selected excellent local governments in each category through a rigorous review process.

This year, the district took steps to properly manage social security benefits for transparent welfare finance operation, focusing all efforts on inspections and recoveries to prevent fraudulent claims, earning the honor of being selected as an excellent local government in the field of social security fraud management.

In particular, to ensure that taxpayers' money does not disappear as blind money, four dedicated management teams consisting of 39 public officials were organized, and their continuous on-site inspections to prevent the evaporation of welfare funds were recognized.

Prevention education and promotion of the third-party fraud reporting system were conducted targeting 218 social welfare facilities and 17 autonomous organizations within the district to raise residents' interest and participation in social welfare benefit fraud. Additionally, collaboration with the National Health Insurance Service and the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service has led efforts to prevent fraudulent claims in long-term care institutions.

A Nam-gu official stated, "We plan to establish a strong comprehensive plan, including strengthening the operation of a public-private cooperative monitoring team to eradicate fraudulent claims," adding, "We will ensure that social welfare benefits are not leaked and are provided to those who truly need them."
