Taean County in South Chungcheong Province is taking the lead in creating a clean environment by promoting resource recycling and ensuring the stable operation of various treatment facilities.

The county announced plans to continuously improve environmental pollution prevention and resource circulation rates by expanding the sewage treatment facility within the Environmental Management Center by next year and upgrading the municipal waste incineration facility.

First, the county aims to optimize the sewage treatment facility by expanding its capacity, investing a total of 8.39 billion KRW (4.074 billion KRW from the national budget and 4.316 billion KRW from the county budget) in the facility expansion project at the sewage treatment plant site.

The project centers on increasing the daily capacity of the existing sewage treatment facility from 80 tons to 110 tons. The county began the project in 2019 with basic and detailed design orders and commenced construction in May this year.

As of December, the project has reached a 30% completion rate and is expected to be finished by the end of next year.

The county is also making every effort to improve the municipal waste incineration facility. To minimize environmental pollution through stable waste management, the county plans to install a harmful substance removal system (SCR) at the back end of the incinerator in the first half of next year.

This measure comes in response to the significant tightening of domestic incinerator emission standards next year. The new standards for major items will be: sulfur oxides 14.7 ppm (currently 30 ppm), carbon monoxide 160 ppm (currently 200 ppm), nitrogen oxides 56 ppm (currently 70 ppm), and hydrogen chloride 12 ppm (currently 15 ppm).

The county intends to maintain emission levels of harmful substances below next year's standards through the installation of the removal system, aiming to provide the best environmental services by blocking environmental pollution.

Kang Mikyung, head of the Environmental Management Center, said, "We will continue to actively communicate with residents to find solutions and promote environmental policies that provide real benefits to the local community."
