Support for 105 Elderly Waste Collectors...Urgent Provision of Cold Illness Prevention Supplies
Includes Thermal Underwear, Winter Hats, Gloves, and Hot Packs...High-Insulation Functional Products
Accident Prevention Education Included...“Institutional Protection Measures for Safe Livelihood Activities”
Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is providing winter protection kits to prevent safety accidents among elderly waste paper collectors during the cold season.
Most waste paper collectors are elderly and spend long hours outdoors, making them vulnerable to cold-related illnesses. During winter, the risk of falls due to icy roads increases, requiring proactive measures.
Accordingly, the district will distribute winter protection items to 105 elderly individuals to prevent accidents during the severe cold season. The kit consists of 50 items including thermal underwear, winter hats, gloves, and hand warmers, all of which are functional products with high heat retention effects.
In addition, safety education will be conducted simultaneously. Using educational materials provided by the Gwangjin Police Station, detailed traffic safety rules will be explained. Prevention methods for handcart accidents and precautions for waste paper collection will also be provided to raise awareness.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, stated, “We have devised measures to ensure that elderly waste paper collectors can work safely without injury,” and added, “We will actively establish institutional protections so that vulnerable groups can sustain their livelihoods in a safe environment.”
Meanwhile, Gwangjin-gu supported the prevention of heat-related illnesses last summer during the heatwave. In addition, the district has provided lightweight rear carts to 68 elderly waste paper collectors and is implementing various support measures such as compensating the price difference of waste paper by about 150,000 KRW per month.
