President Refuses to Resign
'Resignation Claims' Based on Goodwill Are Not Valid
The Most Orderly Withdrawal Is Impeachment
Kim Jae-seop, a member of the People Power Party, announced on the 11th that he intends to vote in favor of the 'Impeachment Motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol,' which is just three days away.
At a press conference held at the National Assembly Communication Office on the same day, Kim said, "I intend to impeach President Yoon," adding, "This is the way to restore the constitutional order of the Republic of Korea."
Kim Jae-seop, a member of the People Power Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office on the 11th, expressing his support for the impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol.
Kim appears to have made this decision because President Yoon has not expressed a position regarding 'early resignation.' Kim pointed out, "I was not confident about an impeachment carried out in just four days amid anger and excitement," and added, "I thought the president also needed time, but he is refusing to resign." He continued, "The argument for resignation relying on the president's goodwill is no longer valid," and said, "The most orderly way to step down is impeachment."
On the 3rd, Kim voted in favor of the motion demanding the lifting of martial law declared during the emergency, but he did not participate in the vote when the first impeachment motion against President Yoon was submitted on the 7th. At that time, Kim abstained from voting in line with the party's stance. Afterwards, a cutter knife was found along with a sign urging impeachment in front of Kim's residence, and a condolence wreath was delivered to his constituency office, sparking fierce protests. The impeachment motion was discarded due to failure to meet the quorum for the vote.
Kim demanded that the party also adopt a pro-impeachment stance as its official position. He said, "Our party must take responsibility," and added, "The path of death is the path of life." Furthermore, he said, "We may have to cross a sea of impeachment larger and deeper than the river of impeachment we barely crossed," and added, "I believe in our party's potential. Let's start anew with confidence."
With Kim expressing his intention to support the impeachment motion, the People Power Party now has a fourth defector from the impeachment motion, following Kim Ye-ji, Kim Sang-wook, Ahn Cheol-soo, and Cho Kyung-tae. Bae Hyun-jin said she would participate in the vote the day before but did not disclose her stance on approval or disapproval.
