"Stock Price Around $3 Ten Years Ago Now $140"
Jensen Huang, NVIDIA CEO, Previously Selected Among 100 Most Influential People
Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, has been named '2024 CEO of the Year' by the American news magazine Time.
On the 10th (local time), Time praised the success of the global semiconductor company AMD as thanks to Lisa Su's leadership and selected her as CEO of the Year.
Time introduced AMD as "one of the world's leading companies designing central processing unit (CPU) chips that power personal computers and data centers," and "also the top designer of graphics processing units (GPUs), special chips used to create and run AI programs like ChatGPT."
Time stated, "When Lisa Su became CEO 10 years ago, AMD's stock price was around $3," and "Everyone was questioning how long the company could survive." It continued, "Lisa Su led a top-down redesign of AMD products, restored relationships with customers, and took the AI boom to a new level," adding, "In 2022, the company's value surpassed its historic rival Intel, and AMD's stock is currently trading at $140."
However, Time noted that AMD still remains second in the GPU market. While Lisa Su overtook Intel, Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia and Lisa Su's cousin, led Nvidia to become the world's most valuable company. Nvidia currently controls over 90% of the AI training and inference chip market. Meanwhile, AMD announced last month a global workforce reduction of about 4%. AMD explained the layoffs as "to secure a stronger position in the AI chip market, which Nvidia is leading," and "to focus our resources on high-growth opportunities."
Time said, "Lisa Su has the heavy responsibility of leading the company through many obstacles," and "Those who know Lisa Su describe her as a smart strategist who invests in talented people and boldly removes those who do not fulfill their roles."
Meanwhile, Lisa Su, a Taiwanese-American, moved to the United States with her parents at the age of three. After entering the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1986, she began to gain recognition as an expert in the semiconductor field and pursued a semiconductor research and development career at IBM. From 1995 to 2007, Lisa Su worked for 12 years in IBM's research and development (R&D) department, publishing more than 40 semiconductor-related papers. One of her notable research achievements was replacing the semiconductor wiring material, which had been aluminum until then, with copper, improving processing speed by more than 20%. This remains an industry standard to this day.
Lisa Su has also attracted attention as a Taiwanese-American and fifth cousin of Jensen Huang. Lisa Su is the granddaughter of Jensen Huang's uncle. At an event in 2020, Lisa Su mentioned Jensen Huang, saying, "We are distant relatives." Jensen Huang moved from Taiwan to the United States at the age of nine. Jensen Huang was selected as one of Time's 100 most influential people of the year.
