Yisangil, Mayor of Yongin, "Will Do Our Best for Citizens' Wish to Extend the Gyeonggang Line"

Cheoin-gu Citizens' Coalition Delivers 21,000 Signatures to Mayor Lee
"Actively Promote the Establishment of Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad and Extension of Bundang Line"

Lee Sang-il, mayor of Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, reaffirmed his commitment to promoting the extension of the Gyeonggang Line subway route. At a meeting where he received a petition signed by 21,000 residents of Cheoin-gu, he stated that it is a project that "must be carried out to create residential conditions for semiconductor personnel."

On the 10th, seven members including Lee Eun-ho, representative of the Cheoin-gu Citizens' Solidarity, visited the city hall and delivered the petition signed by 21,000 people for the "Gyeonggang Line Extension Project," Yongin City announced on the 11th.

This project, jointly promoted by Yongin City and Gwangju City, involves branching off from Gyeonggang Line’s Gyeonggi Gwangju Station and connecting to Namsa-eup via Everland, the public housing district in Idong, a new town behind the semiconductor industrial complex, and the Idong-Namsa Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex.

Mayor Lee emphasized, "The extension of the Gyeonggang Line is a project with a high cost-benefit (B/C) ratio of 0.92," adding, "It is a project that must be done to develop the semiconductor industry and create residential conditions for specialized personnel."

He said, "Many city officials are making every effort to realize this project along with the 'Establishment of the Southern Gyeonggi Metropolitan Railroad' and the 'Extension of the Bundang Line from Giheung Station to Osan University Station,'" and added, "We will do our best to deliver the petition containing the citizens' wishes to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport so that Yongin’s transportation infrastructure, including railroads and roads, can be significantly expanded."

This project is a route that can complement the metropolitan area southeastern railway network, including the GTX (Great Train Express) lines A to F. In particular, it connects to the Shinbundang Line through Pangyo Station and can be extended to Incheon via the Wolgot-Pangyo Line in the future, making it a route that can greatly improve the metropolitan transportation network in Yongin’s Cheoin area.

Because of this, in October last year, the 'Gyeonggang Line Promotion Committee,' composed of Yongin citizens, sent a petition with about 20,000 signatures to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and this month, they also delivered a petition to the National Assembly’s Transportation Committee. Earlier this year, Mayor Lee officially requested that the route be included as a new project in the '5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan,' and in June, he met with Baek Won-guk, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, to seek government interest and cooperation.
