1.5069 Trillion Won Invested to Build 45 Stations Along 38.8km
Mayor Lee Jangwoo: "A Historic Moment Opening a New Future for Daejeon Transportation"
The construction of Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2, a tram line, has finally begun 28 years after the government's approval of the basic plan in 1996.
On the 11th, the city of Daejeon held a groundbreaking ceremony for sections 1, 2, and 7 of the Daejeon tram construction project at the riverside upstream of Yudeunggyo Bridge, attended by Mayor Lee Jangwoo, Daejeon City Council Chairman Cho Wonhui, and Metropolitan Transport Commission Chairman Kang Heeup.
Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2 will be a circular line with a total length of 38.8 km, connecting all five districts of Daejeon, with 45 stations and one train depot. The total project cost is 1.5069 trillion won.
The civil engineering and construction work is divided into 15 sections to increase the participation of local construction companies. Of the six sections put out for bid this year, contractors for three have been finalized, and the remaining sections are expected to be awarded and contractors selected by the first half of next year.
The tram construction aims to open by the end of 2028, following three and a half years of construction and six months of trial operation.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, the draft design of the hydrogen tram, currently being manufactured by Hyundai Rotem under a contract signed last July, was unveiled and drew attention.
The final design of the hydrogen tram will be confirmed in February next year after expert consultations, a second public preference survey, and a public design review process.
At the ceremony, the design of Yudeunggyo Bridge, which is currently being demolished and replaced with a temporary bridge after its pier subsided during heavy rain last July, was also revealed.
The newly constructed Yudeunggyo Bridge will be a three-span, three-arch bridge symbolizing Daejeon's three major rivers, with a main span of 96 meters.
The bridge incorporates the soft and gentle image of willow trees and is designed to resemble skipping stones on water. Elevators and stairs will be installed to improve accessibility from the bridge to the river. Although the bridge span has increased significantly from 24 meters to 96 meters, the number of piers will be reduced from six to two, which is expected to help secure water flow during heavy rains.
Mayor Lee Jangwoo stated, "Today marks a historic moment as Daejeon Urban Railway Line 2, whose groundbreaking has been repeatedly anticipated and delayed for decades, finally begins construction, opening a new future for Daejeon's transportation. We will focus all our administrative capabilities to ensure the construction is carried out safely and swiftly."
