The Gangseo Miracle Medi Special Zone was designated as a special zone in 2015 to develop the area around Gangseo-ro and Gonghang-daero, centered on airports (Incheon International Airport, Gimpo International Airport), into an international medical tourism hub.
The district has been striving to realize a medical tourism specialized city by promoting integrated Western and Korean medical services and attracting foreign patients through specialized projects and regulatory exemptions.
This award is the third time following wins in 2017 and 2019. It also received the Minister of Health and Welfare Award at the '2024 Wellness Fair' held on August 13 and the Grand Prize in the Basic Local Government Global Marketing category at 'Medical Asia 2024' on the 5th of this month.
The Regional Specialized Development Special Zone refers to an area where special regulatory exemptions tailored to regional characteristics are applied to promote balanced regional development, economic revitalization, and specialized industry cultivation. This evaluation, hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, was conducted in three stages, including quantitative, qualitative, and public evaluations of the operational performance of 181 special zones nationwide.
The evaluation comprehensively assessed the effects of special zone operations on the region, such as job creation and sales increase, economic effects from utilizing regulatory exemptions, and future development plans. The top nine special zones were selected as excellent special zones.
District Mayor Jin Gyo-hoon said at the '2024 Gangseo Miracle Medi Special Zone Council Regular General Meeting' held on the 10th, "The number of foreign patients visiting Korean medical institutions is increasing due to advanced medical technology at the level of developed countries and relatively low medical fees compared to other countries." He added, "We will do our best to develop Gangseo-gu into an international medical tourism city through Gangseo-gu’s unique specialized medical services, such as integrated Western and Korean medical services."
