The prosecution has sought the death penalty for Park Daesung (30), the 'random murder suspect' who brutally stabbed a teenage woman walking down the street with a weapon.

On the 10th, at the sentencing hearing held by the Criminal Division 1 of the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Kim Yonggyu), the prosecution requested the death penalty along with a 30-year electronic monitoring order for Park Daesung, who was charged with murder and attempted murder.
The prosecutor stated, "The defendant caused the victim's family and acquaintances an irreparable sense of loss and helplessness, and instilled fear and anxiety in the local community that anyone could become a target of crime. As long as the death penalty remains, considering the requests of the bereaved families seeking justice, the highest sentence in court is appropriate."
Based on CCTV footage showing Park Daesung smiling after the crime, repeatedly stabbing the victim with a weapon even before she resisted, and his attempt to blame the victim for the cause of death by saying "I stabbed more because she resisted," the prosecution judged that Park Daesung is not remorseful.
The prosecutor emphasized, "Psychological analysis revealed psychopathic traits and antisocial personality, indicating a high risk of reoffending. Despite knowing that he cannot control his violent tendencies when drinking, there is no sign of efforts to control himself. Permanent isolation from society is urgently needed."
The victim's mother, who attended the trial, sobbed, saying, "He killed our daughter and still claims he doesn't remember (the attempted murder charge). Speak quickly. Please help our daughter." The victim's father also requested, "Our young daughter with many dreams died without fulfilling them. We ask the citizens of the Republic of Korea to be able to walk the streets safely."
In his final statement, Park Daesung said, "I am sorry to the bereaved family. I will take responsibility for my actions." However, regarding his behavior after the murder (the additional attempted murder charge), he said, "There are parts I do not remember, and I told you I don't remember."
The sentencing hearing will be held at 10:10 a.m. on January 9 next year.
Park Daesung was brought to trial on charges of stabbing an 18-year-old woman multiple times with a weapon around 12:44 a.m. on September 26 in Jorye-dong, Suncheon City, causing her death. After the crime, he allegedly attempted additional murders by visiting a pub and a karaoke room operated by a female owner without wearing shoes and carrying a weapon.
