Non-disclosure of President's Salary Receipt Status and Amount
Public interest is focused on whether President Yoon Seok-yeol, who has been effectively suspended from duty since the emergency martial law situation, is receiving his salary.
According to the National Public Officials' Salary Regulations on the 10th, the president's annual salary is 254.94 million KRW. The monthly salary is approximately 21.24 million KRW before tax and about 14 million KRW after tax. Typically, public officials receive their monthly salary on the 17th of each month.
President Yoon has not been performing his duties since he stated in a national address on the 7th that "the future political stability measures, including my term, will be entrusted to our party." Therefore, there are claims that his salary should be withheld for about 10 days and that subsequent monthly payments should also be suspended. Similar criticisms are being directed at the president’s aides in the presidential office.
However, since the president’s salary details are confidential, the public cannot know exactly whether President Yoon is receiving his monthly salary. Thus, it is difficult to verify the actual receipt and amount, and this controversy is expected to continue.
Meanwhile, on the 9th, Yoon Jun-byeong, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (Jeonbuk Jeongeup·Gochang), introduced a bill titled the “Salary Act for Impeached Officials” (a partial amendment to the National Finance Act), which mandates a 50% reduction in salary if duties are suspended due to impeachment. Representative Yoon stated, "It is not in line with public sentiment for a person who has been impeached and suspended from duty for unconstitutional or illegal acts in the course of their duties to continue receiving their full salary."
