Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, held a ceremony on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at the Mapo District Office to present the 'Korean War Medal of Honor Recovery' awards.
The awardee was the late Lee Myung-won, who enlisted on January 30, 1948, and served as a sergeant in the armored regiment of the Capital Division during the Korean War, dedicating himself to the nation.
Amid the chaos of the war, the late Lee Myung-won did not receive his Medal of Honor at the time, but through this ceremony, the Hwarang Medal of Honor was presented to his daughter, Lee Hye-kyung.
Lee Hye-kyung expressed deep gratitude while honoring her father's bravery and sacrifice.
At the ceremony, Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, stated, "I hope this project, which honors the heroes of the Korean War and strives to never forget their noble dedication, will continue," and added, "We will do our best to restore the honor of those who devoted themselves to the country."
The Korean War Medal of Honor Recovery project is a meaningful national initiative that seeks out those who were designated as Medal of Honor recipients during the war but did not receive the actual medals, reexamines their contributions, and presents the medals to their descendants.
