Handonghun to Announce 'Early Resignation Roadmap' Possibly Today

Possible No Conclusion at Party Meeting Due to Opposition from ChinYoon Lawmakers
Rep. Kim Sang-wook Expresses Support for Impeachment for the Third Time

Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party, is reportedly set to announce a roadmap related to President Yoon Seok-yeol's early resignation at the emergency party members' meeting on the 10th. The agreed-upon roadmap could be released as early as that afternoon, but the meeting may be prolonged without a conclusion by the afternoon due to opposition from pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Seok-yeol) faction lawmakers.

Handonghun to Announce 'Early Resignation Roadmap' Possibly Today

According to political circles, Han is expected to announce a roadmap on that day that includes President Yoon's early resignation by March next year and a presidential election 60 days thereafter. It is reported that the People Power Party's political stabilization task force (TF) prepared a draft roadmap for political recovery centered on holding the presidential election in the first half of next year and delivered it to Han.

This is because there are calls within the party that the president must resign at the latest before the second impeachment vote. After the senior lawmakers' meeting on the morning of the same day, Rep. Cho Kyung-tae of the People Power Party told reporters, "Before the second impeachment motion arrives, I believe (President Yoon's) immediate resignation is the best solution to resolve the public's confusion, suffering, and mental difficulties, and it is a stronger solution than impeachment." A first-term lawmaker of the People Power Party also said in a phone interview, "There is talk that it must be done before the Saturday when the second impeachment motion is issued," adding, "It is becoming more urgent. There is an opinion that it should be done proactively and quickly."

However, it is reported that there is strong opposition from pro-Yoon faction lawmakers regarding the early resignation. A re-elected lawmaker of the People Power Party opposed, saying, "No conclusion was reached even at the party meeting the day before, and the political stabilization TF was launched the day before, so how can such a quick decision be made?" Among the pro-Yoon faction lawmakers, there are also talks about maintaining power until the 2026 local elections.

In this situation, signs of internal dissent votes within the People Power Party are spreading. Rep. Kim Sang-wook held a press conference on the same day and publicly stated his intention to support the next impeachment vote. Rep. Kim revealed that he participated in the vote when the presidential impeachment motion was submitted at the National Assembly plenary session on the 7th but voted against it according to the party line. He said, "(Regarding support for impeachment) there are lawmakers discussing it together. When the time comes, we will share the same will," adding, "In the previous vote, many lawmakers with convictions sympathized that this emergency martial law was wrong and said they would join." He further added, "It is hard to say the exact number, but there are enough votes for the impeachment motion to pass."
