"Did You Apply for a Card?"... Financial Supervisory Service Consumer Alert on New Voice Phishing Scam

#The scam group divided roles among card delivery personnel, card company counselors, and Financial Supervisory Service employees, deceiving victims into believing they were involved in crimes such as personal information leakage and identity theft, then coercing them to take out mortgage loans under the pretext of fund investigation or asset protection procedures. They then lured victims into transferring all assets to a national safety account and embezzled the loan funds.

As such methods, targeting the elderly by pretending to issue cards mistakenly and coercing loans to embezzle funds, have become rampant, the Financial Supervisory Service issued a consumer alert 'Caution' on the 10th.

The Financial Supervisory Service also provided a three-step response guideline to prevent fraud. In the first step, it explained that links from unknown sources should never be clicked, and when verifying card issuance, one should contact the card company's main phone number. It also noted that if keywords such as 'personal information leakage' or 'identity theft' are heard, suspicion is warranted.

In the next step, it urged caution regarding keywords like 'involvement in crime,' 'arrest investigation,' and 'confidentiality.' If you have spoken with the prosecution or the Financial Supervisory Service, you should verify the name, affiliation, and position of the contacted employee, then call the institution's main phone number again to request connection to that employee. Since the victim's own mobile phone may be linked again to scammers through malicious application (app) installation, it is necessary to contact the institution using a landline or a friend's mobile phone.

As the final third step, it is important to note that national institutions never request money or induce loans under the pretext of fund investigation or asset protection under any circumstances.
