Urging the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to Designate the Gyeongbu Line Undergrounding Pilot Project
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Hee-young) announced on the 9th that it will hold a meeting related to the 'Urgent Designation of the Gyeongbu Line Underground Pilot Project' at 4 p.m. on the 11th in the main conference room of Yongsan-gu Office, together with six local governments including Dongjak-gu.
The Gyeongbu Line (Seoul Station to Dangjeong Station) underground project covers a total section of 32 km, including seven administrative districts and 18 stations in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. If the Gyeongbu Line underground project is realized, traffic congestion between Seoul and Gyeonggi areas will be alleviated, and regional economic development and improvement of residents' living environment are expected through the development of the upper space.
Attending the meeting will be Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu and chairman of the Gyeongbu Line Promotion Council; Jang Young-min, Deputy Mayor of Dongjak-gu; Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu; Eom Ui-sik, Deputy Mayor and Acting Mayor of Guro-gu; Yoo Sung-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu; Ha Eun-ho, Mayor of Gunpo; and Choi Dae-ho, Mayor of Anyang. They will emphasize the urgency and necessity of the Gyeongbu Line underground project and discuss future response plans.
The seven local governments have faced difficulties in balanced regional development due to the Gyeongbu Line railway and have suffered significant inconveniences such as traffic congestion and noise. The Seoul districts and Gyeonggi basic local governments through which the Gyeongbu Line passes formed the 'Gyeongbu Line Underground Promotion Council' in 2012 to realize the undergrounding of the railway.
The heads of local governments belonging to the Promotion Council attending the Gyeongbu Line underground meeting will sign a joint petition urging the selection of the Gyeongbu Line section as a pilot project and strongly urge the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to designate the project as a pilot project.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, "The Gyeongbu Line underground project is a project that will bring important changes not only to alleviate traffic congestion but also to promote balanced regional development and improve residents' quality of life," adding, "Each local government will cooperate to unite efforts so that the Gyeongbu Line underground project can be designated as a pilot project."
