Selected by the National Balanced Development Committee... Construction to Begin in 2019
Successful Case of Recreating Urban Vulnerable Areas into Safe and Hopeful Foundations
Expansion of Living and Sanitation Infrastructure - Providing Safe Residential Environment and Realizing Resident-Centered Environmental Improvement
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 8th that the 'Urban Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project' underway in Sinheung Village, Uijeongbu, is scheduled for completion in December. The project began in 2019 after being selected through a national balanced development committee contest.
The 'Urban Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project' aims to secure a safe residential environment in urban areas with poor living conditions. Focusing on environmental improvements, it repairs walls and retaining walls at risk of collapse, installs security lights, and expands sanitation infrastructure to ensure a basic standard of living. Additionally, it practically improves residents' living environments through the creation of community hub spaces and home repair support.
The Sinheung Village in Uijeongbu, which will be completed this time, is an area with many national and public lands and unauthorized buildings after the redevelopment project was canceled in 2012. By repairing water supply facilities near the stream and maintaining dangerous retaining walls, a safe environment was provided for residents. These efforts significantly increased local residents' satisfaction.
The project was carried out with active cooperation from residents and was promoted as a customized project reflecting residents' opinions, such as home repair support and the creation of hub spaces, thereby revitalizing the community and fostering a sense of participation.
As a result of this project, Sinheung Village in Uijeongbu is evaluated as a successful case of urban regeneration that re-created urban space together with residents beyond simple environmental improvement.
Going forward, Gyeonggi Province plans to encourage more cities and counties to participate in government contests so that residents in vulnerable areas within the province can benefit. It will also provide customized consulting using the Gyeonggi Province Urban Regeneration Advisory Group, composed of 75 members, to ensure final selection in the contests.
Park Hyo-sik, head of the Residential Environment Maintenance Team of Gyeonggi Province, said, “The Urban Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project in Sinheung Village, Uijeongbu, is a good example that enhanced the value of the local community based on resident participation,” adding, “We will continue to strive to ensure that residents can enjoy a safe and happy life.”
