On the 7th at 5 p.m., the National Assembly will hold a plenary session and proceed with votes in the order of the "Bill on the Appointment of a Special Prosecutor for the Investigation of the Stock Price Manipulation Case Involving First Lady Kim Geon-hee, Wife of President Yoon Seok-yeol (Special Prosecutor Bill for First Lady Kim Geon-hee)" and the "Impeachment Motion against President Yoon Seok-yeol."
Speaker Woo Won-sik announced this schedule in a notice sent to the media on the same day. Generally, the National Assembly prioritizes personnel-related agendas such as impeachment motions over ordinary bills in plenary sessions, but this time, the order of agenda processing was changed.
Speaker Woo Won-sik announced the passage of the impeachment motion against Chief Auditor Choi Jae-hae, Seoul Central District Prosecutor Lee Chang-soo, 4th Deputy Prosecutor Cho Sang-won, and Chief of the Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 2 Choi Jae-hoon at the plenary session held at the National Assembly on the 5th. In the case of the presidential impeachment motion, it requires approval by at least two-thirds (200) of the total 300 members of the National Assembly. If the People Power Party abstains from voting or unanimously votes against it, and only the opposition parties including the Democratic Party (192 members) support it, the motion will be rejected. Therefore, at least 8 defections from the People Power Party are necessary for the impeachment motion to pass.
On the other hand, the Special Prosecutor Bill for First Lady Kim Geon-hee is passed by a two-thirds majority of the members present. If People Power Party members abstain from voting, the bill can be passed with only Democratic Party members voting in favor.
