Kukim City and Provincial Governors "Oppose President Yoon's Impeachment"... Demand Emergency National Unity Cabinet

Emergency Meeting of 8 Members Including Yoo Jeong-bok, Oh Se-hoon, and Hong Joon-pyo

Mayors and governors affiliated with the ruling party opposed the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who declared martial law. Instead, they demanded that President Yoon form a national emergency cabinet and step back to a secondary role.

The Council of Mayors and Governors, composed of metropolitan leaders from the People Power Party, held an emergency meeting on the martial law situation on the 6th at the Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, and issued a statement reflecting this position.

Attending the meeting were eight members including Council Chairman Yoo Jeong-bok, Mayor of Incheon, as well as Oh Se-hoon, Mayor of Seoul; Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu; Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon; Choi Min-ho, Mayor of Sejong; Kim Jin-tae, Governor of Gangwon; Kim Tae-heum, Governor of Chungnam; and Kim Young-hwan, Governor of Chungbuk. The remaining four mayors and governors who did not attend also signed the statement.

The council stated, "We offer our apologies with a repentant heart regarding today's political situation," but added, "However, impeachment of the president must be avoided. We must prevent any further suspension of the constitutional order."

They urged President Yoon to "form a national emergency cabinet led by a responsible prime minister and step back to a secondary role," and requested that he "clearly announce future political schedules, including a constitutional amendment to shorten the presidential term."

Council Chairman Yoo said, "(I believe that) it is difficult for President Yoon to effectively carry out state affairs as president," but added, "however, for the future of the Republic of Korea, we judged that preventing an extreme situation is appropriate for political and national development, which is why we suggested stepping back to a secondary role."
