On the 6th, Gwangju City opened an all-weather multipurpose court within Bitgoeul Senior Health Town.
The opening ceremony was attended by over 200 people, including Go Gwangwan, Deputy Mayor of Gwangju City, Kim Byeongnae, Mayor of Nam-gu, Im Miran, Gwangju City Council member, and citizens. The event began with a pungmulnori performance by members of Bitgoeul Senior Health Town, followed by a ribbon-cutting and a gateball demonstration.
The city expects the newly opened all-weather multipurpose court to become a new landmark supporting various indoor activities for both Health Town members and citizens.
The all-weather multipurpose court at Bitgoeul Senior Health Town was additionally constructed with a total project cost of 1.46 billion KRW (420 million KRW from the national government and 1.058 billion KRW from the city), adding 984㎡ (approximately 300 pyeong) across two courts. Including the two existing courts, a total of four courts will now be available for gateball games, which is expected to greatly contribute to promoting a healthy life for local seniors and revitalizing community sports.
The newly constructed multipurpose court was a long-standing wish of the users, as it allows gateball to be played regardless of weather or season. Since 2022, user opinions were gathered through three public hearings, and after benchmarking advanced facilities, the court was completed in three years.
Kang Gijeong, Mayor of Gwangju, stated, “I am very pleased that with the opening of the multipurpose court, seniors can exercise without weather restrictions,” and added, “We will continue to build Gwangju as an age-friendly city for the healthy and happy lives of our seniors.”
Meanwhile, Bitgoeul Senior Health Town, which opened in 2009, is the largest senior complex leisure facility in the country with about 70,000 members and an average of 3,000 visitors daily, serving as a hub for senior welfare in Gwangju City.
