Gwangju Buk-gu Council: "Yoon, Who Destroyed Democracy, Must Resign Immediately"

As rallies and protests condemning President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of martial law spread, local councils in the Gwangju area are issuing consecutive statements of condemnation.

According to the Gwangju Buk-gu Council on the 6th, they released a statement the previous day condemning President Yoon Suk-yeol for declaring martial law.

In the statement, Buk-gu Council members said, "The night of the 3rd was an indelible day in the history of the Republic of Korea, marking the destruction of democracy and constitutional order," adding, "Although the martial law was lifted after six hours, the people had to stay awake with wide-open eyes, enraged by the deployment of special forces to the National Assembly, a situation that destroyed democracy."

They continued, "President Yoon's martial law declaration is an unconstitutional and illegal act that destroys the constitutional order and reverses the history of democracy in the Republic of Korea, which was protected through blood and sweat," and stated, "The people are the owners of the Republic of Korea. President Yoon's actions to damage democracy, which was preserved by the people's blood and sweat, and to oppress the people to maintain his personal power, constitute a clear 'political coup d'?tat.'"

They concluded, "On behalf of the 430,000 residents of Buk-gu, we urge President Yoon to take responsibility for the declaration of martial law, resign immediately, and face judgment from the people and the law."
