The Korea Press Ethics Commission announced on the 6th that it has published "Ethics in Articles, What the Media Missed" to review the ethical standards of media coverage and provide guidelines for practicing dignified journalism.
This book systematically organizes major review cases published in the monthly newsletter "Press Ethics" by the Press Ethics Commission over the past five years from 2020 to this year. It covers topics such as ▲ fairness and public interest in the media ▲ protection of personal rights ▲ copyright protection ▲ advertising ethics. Through this, it aims to raise awareness of ethical issues frequently overlooked by the media and provide an opportunity to deeply reflect on the impact of media coverage on society.
In particular, it offers abundant real cases related to various ethical issues recently problematic in media coverage, including sensational reporting, biased reporting, invasion of privacy, defamation, infringement of portrait rights, and use of vulgar language. Accordingly, it is expected that both the media industry and readers will be able to more easily understand the current status and challenges of press ethics.
Kim Jae-hyung, Chairman of the Press Ethics Commission (Professor at Seoul National University School of Law, former Supreme Court Justice), said, "If the media is a mirror of society, this book is a mirror of Korean media ethics," adding, "This book focuses on providing standards that help not only journalists but also students aspiring to be journalists realize and practice the importance of journalism ethics."
Chairman Kim continued, "Since the establishment of the Korea Press Ethics Commission in 1961, this is the first booklet published to publicize media ethics and make it easy for general readers to understand media ethics," adding, "It is a resource condensed with the ethical standards and concerns accumulated by the Press Ethics Commission over the past 63 years, serving as a practical reference for media professionals and as material to help readers understand the social responsibility and ethics of the media."
