Naver Shares AI Safety Policy Cases at the UN

"Applying AI Safety Principles to Industry Practice"

Naver announced on the 6th that it attended the event titled "Towards a human rights-based approach to new and emerging technologies: From concept to implementation," held at the United Nations (UN) Geneva Office in Switzerland, where it introduced its efforts to build a safe artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem.

This year’s event was co-hosted by the Seoul National University Artificial Intelligence Policy Initiative (SAPI), which has been conducting phased in-depth research and publishing annual reports since 2022 under the theme of "A human rights-based approach to new technologies," and the Universal Rights Group (URG), together with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the UN in Geneva.

At the event, Naver shared cases of applying abstract principles for safe AI to industry practices. Park Woo-cheol, Naver’s Policy/RM Agenda lawyer who gave the presentation, introduced CHEC (Consultation on Human-centered AI’s Ethical Considerations), Naver’s AI ethics advisory process that has been operating since 2022. CHEC is a policy designed to apply the "Naver AI Ethics Guidelines" in the actual service launch process. It is characterized by considering social perspectives from the planning and development stages.

Lawyer Park Woo-cheol explained, "Without understanding the situation on the ground, AI ethics principles can become trivial stories. Naver collaborated with academic experts such as SAPI to make AI ethics principles usable in the field and made efforts to understand the service planning and development processes on site."

Other policies to concretize the Naver AI Ethics Guidelines were also introduced. The "ClovaX Usage Guide for People," released in 2023, is the result of considering how the Naver AI Ethics Guidelines can be applied to rapidly advancing generative AI technologies. This year, Naver also newly established the AI Safety Framework (ASF) to systematically recognize, assess, and manage the potential risks of AI during the development and deployment of AI systems.
