Gangwon-do Provides Various Information to Export Companies... Export Volume Continues to Increase
Exports of Strategic Items Such as Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Are Significantly Growing
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Jin-tae) announced on the 5th that it received the Prime Minister’s Institutional Award in the excellent export support category at the 62nd Trade Day ceremony.
This award marks the first time in three years since receiving the Presidential Institutional Award at the 59th Trade Day in 2021, and it is interpreted as a result of Gangwon Province’s export support efforts leading to an increase in exports by local companies.

Gangwon’s exports were about 2 billion dollars annually until 2020, but grew significantly to 2.7 billion dollars in 2021, and have since maintained around 2.7 billion dollars. The cumulative export amount from January to October this year recorded the highest performance ever, growing 7.5% compared to the same period last year.
In particular, not only large and medium-sized enterprises but also Gangwon’s strategic export items such as pharmaceuticals (vaccines, botulinum toxin, etc., increased by 24.7%) and medical devices and electronic devices (ultrasound diagnostic devices, etc., increased by 7.8%) greatly contributed to the export growth trend.
The reason for receiving the Prime Minister’s Institutional Award this time is known to be the high evaluation of Gangwon Province’s efforts to discover and support various new projects through export company surveys and analysis of export performance of participating companies to expand exports of small and medium-sized enterprises. Especially, the new initiatives to connect companies with overseas buyers by building an overseas buyer database (DB), providing overseas market information, and offering comprehensive information services to export companies were also effective.
Additionally, in the bio and medical device sectors, which are Gangwon’s major export strategic items, the province was recognized for its significant achievements by newly supporting overseas professional conference attendance, academic journal advertising, and marketing, considering the specialized technical characteristics.
Won Hong-sik, Director of the Economic Bureau of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, said, “Receiving the Prime Minister’s Award this time is very meaningful as Gangwon’s export support efforts were highly evaluated compared to other provinces,” and added, “We will actively support strengthening the competitiveness of companies and entering new global markets so that Gangwon’s exports can continue to grow next year.”
