Gwangju City Receives 'Excellent' Rating in Ministry of Environment's Waterworks Operation Evaluation

Gwangju City Receives 'Excellent' Rating in Ministry of Environment's Waterworks Operation Evaluation Gwangju Waterworks Headquarters building.

The Gwangju Metropolitan Waterworks Headquarters was selected as an excellent institution in the Ministry of Environment's '2024 General Waterworks Operation and Management Inspection.'


The General Waterworks Operation and Management Inspection is conducted annually by the Ministry of Environment to enhance the competitiveness of waterworks operators by establishing efficient water supply systems and improving operation and management efficiency, as well as to promote healthy competition among waterworks operators to improve the quality of water services.


The evaluation indicators consist of 29 items across three areas: ▲9 items in the general field ▲18 items in the operation and management field ▲2 items in the policy field, covering the entire waterworks operation.


The city received high marks for its efforts to provide citizens with stable tap water supply and increase drinking water usage, including enhancing crisis response capabilities in the drinking water sector, maintaining aging water facilities, complying with the possession of water treatment facility operation managers who are experts in water treatment plant operations, improving compliance rates with mandatory water sector education for affiliated employees, and improving working conditions for local waterworks operation personnel.


To improve operation and management this year, the city formed a dedicated task force (TF), thoroughly reviewed evaluation indicators with practitioners in advance, and held quarterly evaluation data meetings to ensure thorough preparation for the operation and management inspection.


Kim Il-yong, head of the Gwangju Waterworks Headquarters, said, “This is the result of proving the efforts of the Waterworks Headquarters through work innovation such as establishing a crisis management response system and systematic maintenance of aging water facilities. We will continue to do our best to supply safe and clean tap water to citizens.”
