"Habitat Expanded by Over 200 km Compared to 2021"
A wild Baekdusan tiger was captured on camera for the first time in 30 years in the Baekdusan (Chinese name Changbaishan) National Nature Reserve in Jilin Province, China, near the border with North Korea.
On the 3rd, a wild Baekdusan tiger (Siberian tiger) was captured on a mobile phone in the northeastern part of Baekdusan (Chinese name Changbaishan), Jilin Province, China. Jilin Xinhua, Yonhap News.
According to the Chinese state media China Daily on the 5th, staff at the nature reserve management office discovered a wild Baekdusan tiger near a tourist road on the western slope of Baekdusan.
The Baekdusan tiger, also known as the Siberian tiger, is called Dongbeihu in Chinese. It inhabits the northeastern region of China and Baekdusan.
The management staff found footprints believed to be left by a wild Baekdusan tiger about 300 meters away from the area a week ago, then installed nine monitoring cameras to keep watch. They also put up warning signs advising caution due to tiger sightings.
Regarding this discovery, the Jilin Provincial Forestry and Grassland Bureau explained that the habitat of the wild Baekdusan tiger has expanded more than 200 km westward from the Baekdusan Tiger and Leopard National Park, which was designated in October 2021 across Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces.
According to an announcement by the Chinese National Forestry and Grassland Administration in April, the number of wild Baekdusan tigers stably inhabiting the Baekdusan Tiger and Leopard National Park is about 70. This is twice the population compared to when the park was designated as a pilot national park in 2017. The wild Amur leopard population also reaches about 80.
