Daejin University Department of Acting Arts and Gyeonggi University Students Advance to the Finals of the 'Musical Festival'

The Department of Acting Arts at Daejin University announced on the 5th that it has been selected to advance to the finals of the Gyeonggi University Student Musical Festival.

The festival was planned to provide creative opportunities for university students and young aspiring artists in the performing arts field in the Gyeonggi area and to develop Gyeonggi-style youth cultural and artistic content. In particular, the plan is to support them step-by-step to establish a creative foundation for performing arts in the Gyeonggi region and to evolve into a cultural and artistic festival enjoyed by young artists and local residents together.


The festival finals will be held in January next year at the small theater of the Gyeonggi Art Center and will be conducted over three days of judging per group. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place after the performance of the last team in the finals judging.


Prizes for winners include 10 million KRW for the grand prize per group, 5 million KRW for the best award, 3 million KRW for the excellence award, and 1 million KRW each for two encouragement awards. Additionally, two individuals will receive the best acting award of 1 million KRW each, and about five judges' awards totaling 3 million KRW will be given. All groups participating in the finals will also receive a production support fund of 5 million KRW.


The Department of Acting Arts at Daejin University is preparing a musical, directed by student Park Seon-ae from the class of 2021. A total of 24 students from different years are participating in this work, including Kim Eun-gi (class of 2020), Heo Jeong-woo, Lee Je-on, Kim Young-eun (class of 2021), Park Hee-won, Han Yoon-seop, Lim Sol-gyun, Yoo Ha-neul (class of 2022), Jeong Hye-rin, Lim Yeo-jin, Jeong Gyeong-min (class of 2023), and Lim Min-sik (class of 2024).


The musical centers on the conflicts young people experience between their curiosity about sexuality and the oppressive social norms. The work portrays the protagonists’ growth as they find their identities and fight against love, pain, and social pressure, deeply addressing various issues.


Chairman Lee Jong-gyu said, “The inaugural ‘Gyeonggi University Student Musical Festival’ will be a meaningful nourishment for the rapidly developing Korean musical industry and a good motivation for universities in the Gyeonggi area, which have the largest number of musical-related departments. I am pleased to participate in the judging of the first festival. I hope the festival will develop into a representative festival of Gyeonggi Province.”


Professor Hwang Yeon-hee of the Department of Acting Arts at Daejin University said that the musical course was actively utilized by students in the curriculum and deepened through summer and winter sessions. She added that they will continue to encourage creative and enterprising university life and activate such experiences at the departmental level so that graduates can grow as resources in the performing arts industry.
