Discount Sale on Products with 3 Hours Left Before Expiration
Customers Save, Business Owners See Increased Sales
GS25 announced on the 5th that sales of ‘last-minute discount’ products have grown 5.3 times over the past year. Last-minute discount is a service that sells fresh food such as lunch boxes, sandwiches, gimbap, and rice balls with expiration dates approaching at up to 45% off through the GS25 mobile app ‘Our Neighborhood GS’.
Fresh food products with less than 3 hours remaining before expiration are automatically registered as last-minute discount products in the ‘Our Neighborhood GS’ application (app), and customers can purchase the registered products from the mobile app’s ‘Last-minute Discount’ menu and pick them up at designated stores.
The reason sales increased 5.3 times within one year of launching last-minute discounts is due to more consumers seeking discounted products amid high inflation. This consumption behavior is mainly seen among the core convenience store customers aged 20-30. In fact, an analysis of last-minute discount users in March showed that 38% were in their 20s and 34% in their 30s. Since those in their 20s and 30s account for over 70% and are familiar with mobile apps, they are actively utilizing last-minute discounts. By gender, male users were about 10% more than female users.
Last-minute discounts also have a high repurchase rate. GS25 analyzed last-minute discount product usage data over the past year until the end of November this year and found that 50% of customers used the service more than twice. The customer who used last-minute discounts the most purchased a total of 522 times, averaging about 1.5 times per day over the year.
GS25 expects the cumulative sales volume of last-minute discount products to reach 500,000 units by the end of this year. Son Su-jeong, manager of GS Retail Quick Commerce Division, said, “Last-minute discounts are a triple-win good consumption product that sells products to customers at discounted prices, provides additional sales to store owners, and contributes to environmental protection by reducing discarded products,” adding, “We expect the use of last-minute discounts to continue increasing due to the impact of high inflation.”
