"Trump Encourages Use of Force for Political Goals"
A CNN correspondent hinted that the political instability in South Korea caused by the declaration and lifting of martial law could also happen in the United States after the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
According to the British Daily Mail on the 4th, correspondent MJ Lee appeared on CNN that day and introduced the situation where President Yoon Seok-yeol declared martial law on the afternoon of the 3rd but lifted it after six hours. Lee said, "The reason this incident is shocking to Koreans is because it is not far in history that the same thing happened in Seoul," adding, "People from my parents' or grandparents' generation have already experienced this."
He then emphasized that the United States, ahead of Trump's inauguration, should pay attention to South Korea's recent incident. Lee said, "The declaration of martial law is something that Americans especially need to pay attention to right now, ahead of Trump's inauguration," adding, "Trump is someone who said he wants to 'use the military' to chase his enemies."
John Bresnahan, co-founder of Punchbowl News, who also participated as a panelist on the broadcast that day, expressed concern, saying, "Trump has encouraged the use of force to achieve political goals," and "The sight of democracy facing such a crisis is what people fear with Trump's return." He also commented, "It is shocking to see such upheaval happening in one of America's closest allies, a country that has protected democracy for decades."
Meanwhile, President Yoon declared martial law through an emergency national address on the afternoon of the 3rd. In response, the National Assembly handled a resolution demanding the lifting of martial law with 190 votes in favor out of 190 members present at the plenary session at 1 a.m. that day. Around 4:27 a.m. on the same day, President Yoon lifted the martial law through a statement.
