On the 4th, five metropolitan governors from the Democratic Party, including Kang Gi-jung, Mayor of Gwangju, Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, Kim Kwan-young, Governor of Jeonbuk Province, and Oh Young-hoon, Governor of Jeju Province, issued a joint statement at the National Assembly regarding "President Yoon Seok-yeol's attempted coup," urging the "immediate resignation of President Yoon Seok-yeol."

In the joint statement proposed by Mayor Kang Gi-jung of Gwangju, they said, "The night of martial law has ended, and the day of judgment has dawned," adding, "With last night's failed 'coup attempt,' it has become clear that President Yoon Seok-yeol lacks the qualification and ability to be responsible for the governance of the Republic of Korea. The only thing President Yoon can do for the people is to resign immediately."

They continued, "The Republic of Korea is a nation of mature democratic citizens," emphasizing, "In May 1980, citizens risked their lives to resist Chun Doo-hwan's military coup, and during the Park Geun-hye administration, democratic citizens raised candles to lead the impeachment of the president. Last night, they once again prevented the 'coup attempt' in the most democratic way. This is the true strength of our Republic of Korea."

The governors also stated, "Just as the pain of Gwangju in May 1980 was sublimated into the democratization of the Republic of Korea, last night's crisis must be turned into an opportunity for the maturation of Korean democracy," and declared ▲ President Yoon Seok-yeol's declaration of martial law is clearly unconstitutional and invalid ▲ President Yoon must take responsibility for destroying the constitutional order and resign immediately ▲ they will firmly protect the daily stability and livelihood of city and provincial residents.

Meanwhile, prior to the joint statement, the five governors met with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik to discuss countermeasures related to President Yoon's declaration and lifting of emergency martial law.
