Demonstration of 8 Major Public Services Including Autonomous Shared Vehicles from 2026
Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun: "A True Autonomous Driving Era Will Open in Hwaseong"
From 2026, autonomous driving demonstrations for public transportation and shared vehicles will take place in a 30㎢ area around Namyang-eup and other parts of Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do.
Hwaseong-si announced on the 4th that a 30.13㎢ area and a 24.4㎞ road section centered on Namyang-eup have been designated as an 'Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Operation Zone' by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The Ministry designated six new zones including Hwaseong-si and expanded three existing zones as pilot operation zones this time.

The Autonomous Vehicle Pilot Operation Zone is an area where special exceptions for autonomous passenger and freight transportation are granted to promote autonomous driving demonstrations. In addition to Namyang-eup, the newly designated zones include Saesol-dong, Songsan-myeon, and Mado Industrial Complex. It is the largest scale nationwide among the designated zones.
The detailed autonomous driving zones are ▲Zone 1 Namyang District (8.27㎢) ▲Zone 2 Saesol-dong (1.81㎢) ▲Zone 3 Sinwoeri (2.10㎢) ▲Zone 4 Jangjeon-ri (3.12㎢) ▲Zone 5 Munho-ri (4.93㎢) ▲Zone 6 Suhwa-ri (2.45㎢) ▲Zone 7 Siri (4.78㎢) ▲Zone 8 Mado Industrial Complex (0.93㎢) ▲Zone 9 Hwaseong Bio Valley (1.74㎢).
Also, the pilot operation road sections are ▲Section 1 National Road 77 (Songnim Intersection ~ Songnim-ri San 5-14, 2.1㎞) ▲Section 2 Jangjeon Yupo-ro (Yupori 47-9 ~ Bibong Baseball Stadium, 0.9㎞) ▲Section 3 Namyangseo-ro (Woncheon-ri 292-5 ~ Songnim-ri 618-5, 2.0㎞) ▲Section 4 Songsan Bibong-ro (Munho Intersection ~ Gojung 1 Intersection, 4.7㎞) ▲Section 5 Gongnyong-ro (Gojung 1 Intersection ~ Sagang Intersection, 5.6㎞) ▲Section 6 Hwaseong-ro (Sagang Intersection ~ Haramun Intersection, 6.3㎞) ▲Section 7 Mado Industrial Complex-ro (Haramun Intersection ~ Mado Industrial Complex Entrance, 1.9㎞) ▲Section 8 Mado Industrial Complex-ro (Cheongwon-ri 1550 ~ Bio Valley Entrance, 0.9㎞).
From 2026, the pilot operation zones will conduct demonstrations of eight public autonomous driving living lab services including ▲mobility support for transportation-vulnerable groups ▲demand-responsive public transportation mobility ▲autonomous shared vehicles ▲designated route public transportation ▲traffic accident prevention patrols.
Previously, the city was selected as an autonomous driving living lab demonstration city in November last year and completed the selection of sections for the eight public service demonstrations. In August, the city applied for the new designation of the autonomous vehicle pilot operation zone, and through on-site inspections and evaluations by the pilot operation zone committee, it was designated as a pilot operation zone this time.
Jung Myung-geun, mayor of Hwaseong-si, said, "The designation of the pilot operation zone is the first step in introducing autonomous driving services in Hwaseong-si," adding, "The true era of autonomous driving will open in Hwaseong."
