Research on youth mental health indicates that recently, adolescents in South Korea have low awareness and understanding of mental illnesses, leading to many psychological conflicts. Some youths are reported to experience problems such as depression, anxiety, school maladjustment, running away from home, violence, and substance abuse due to inadequate coping with psychological difficulties.
This performance was held to address these issues, targeting Yongmun Middle School, an educational partner institution in Yongmun-myeon, the first Life Respect and Safety Village in Yangpyeong-gun. Approximately 460 students and teachers participated in watching the performance. Additionally, the talk concert and audience interaction held alongside the musical received high interest.
The musical ‘FLY HIGH’ is an original production that tells the story of Areum, a second-year middle school student suffering from a mental illness, who overcomes difficulties while pursuing her dream of becoming a musical actress. Through this, it aims to correct misunderstandings and prejudices about mental illness and promote mental health by establishing a proper identity during adolescence.
A student who watched the musical said, “There is a friend in our class who is emotionally struggling, and I remembered how all the classmates helped together. It was a time to understand mental health through the musical.”
Governor Jeon Jin-seon expressed, “I deeply thank the students and teachers of Yongmun Middle School who actively participated for the mental health of youths despite the cold weather,” and added, “Yangpyeong-gun will continue to plan various events for the mental health of children, adolescents, and local residents in the area and will do its best to promote the mental health of its citizens.”
