Progressive 3 Parties File Treason Charges Against Yoon, Calling It a "Shocking Incident of Constitutional Violation"

Justice Party, Labor Party, Green Party Submit Indictment Against Yoon for Treason Charges

The three progressive parties filed a criminal complaint against President Yoon Seok-yeol for treason over his declaration of martial law.

The Justice Party, the Labor Party, and the Green Party, collectively known as the three progressive parties, submitted a complaint on the 4th to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office against President Yoon, Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, and Army Chief of Staff Park An-su, who served as the martial law commander.

Before submitting the complaint, Justice Party leader Kwon Young-guk told reporters, "There were no substantial grounds for declaring a state of emergency, so this is tantamount to a personal coup." He added, "We were neither at war nor in an armed conflict, nor was there any comparable national emergency. Instead, those opposing the president and government in the National Assembly were wrongly labeled as anti-state forces and accused of attempting to overthrow the regime simply because they opposed the government and cut the budget."

The three progressive parties argue that President Yoon's declaration of martial law did not meet the necessary conditions and was procedurally flawed, rendering it invalid. They claim that banning all political activities, including political organizations, assemblies, and demonstrations, under an invalid martial law constitutes treason by excluding state power or disrupting the national order.

Leader Kwon stated, "The Airborne Brigade broke into the National Assembly, smashing windows and attempting to arrest and detain the Speaker and party leaders. This is a shocking event that tramples on Korea's constitutional order." He added, "President Yoon has lost his qualifications as president and has become a coup and treason ringleader himself." He urged the prosecution to "impose immediate travel bans on President Yoon, Minister Kim, and Chief Park" and emphasized, "They must be arrested and detained immediately."
